Breaking down barriers
Breaking down barriers
You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies, you may trod me in the very dirt…But still, like air, I’LL RISE.
Still I Rise BY MAYA ANGELOU
¡Buenos días! May your day bring you clarity, calm, and the assurance that your existence is a testament to resilience. You are worthy of every good thing today and always.
As a proud multicultural and multilingual family, I am exited to be part of the organizing team putting together the 2025 San Diego Dual Language Conference.
This year, I was excited to propose and advocated for Dr. William Perez to join us focusing on his latest research on indigenous languages in the region of Oaxacalifornia.
Indigenous languages are acts of resistance—living proof of our existence in a world that tries to erase us. As a Mazateco, I know the weight of language loss, but I also know its power. Reviving our tongues is justice and a declaration: we are still here.
“With the election of the incoming president, many are rightfully concerned about what will happen to those seeking refuge in the U.S. as well as long-time immigrants and migrants. At Border Angels, we must ramp up our work, while spreading the critical messages of humanity and dignity. ”
-Executive Director Jesus Gonzalez
Today, I joined leaders from across San Diego in partnership with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)of San Diego & Imperial Counties to prepare and tackle the harmful systems to be introduced by the incoming administration-systems designed to hurt and destroy our communities. We strategized and built immediate, actionable plans to protect our people, defend their humanity, and safeguard their rights.
I’ll be sharing more information and resources the next coming weeks as they become available to prepare and protect our communities.
These past few days have been some of the most challenging, filled with relentless doubt and feelings of inadequacy. As a DACA recipient, the looming uncertainty under new elected leadership has forced me to confront difficult questions about my future. I’ve been reflecting on what would truly be best for my family and me; exploring alternative academic paths and career opportunities that could provide stability and security.
Still, there’s a persistent part of me that clings to my dreams, refusing to let go. Those dreams I have carried with me from my youth feel more like distant “what could have been” moments, slipping further away as I confront the realities. The struggle to hold on, despite the challenges, feels heavier than ever.
Feeling inspired by the next generation of changemakers across Southern California! Had the privilege of connecting with high school students passionate about transforming their communities and fighting for justice. Their energy and vision give me hope for a brighter, more equitable future.
Grateful to be in community with high school students across San Diego County. As a former MEChA student in high school, I didn’t fully appreciate it at the time, but now I recognize how powerful it was to be surrounded by other students who spoke Spanish and shared spaces that celebrated our cultures and languages. Shout out to Assistant Principal Gray, who transformed my perspective on seeing my skills, language, and culture as assets during a time when I didn’t yet understand the implications of my status as an undocumented high school student.

Honoring the life of Emmanuel Diego Jacinto.
“Today, día de los muertos, we are celebrating and remembering our loved ones, who are no longer with us.”
The right to work while pursuing higher education should be a fundamental right accessible to all, including undocumented students. We continue to demand equal opportunities for those who are vital to the fabric of this nation, yet are too often unfairly excluded.
In community with Lic. Gerardo Fernández Noroña, President of the Senate of the Republic of Mexico, we are reminded of the power and resilience of el Pueblo Mexicano. Rooted in our long history of resistance, we must continue to raise our voices, not only to demand our rights but to challenge the systems of oppression that have marginalized our communities for too long.

Our undocumented community deserve spaces that celebrate their identities, honor their stories, and uplift their families. @sandiegocitycollege is answering the call—creating a sanctuary where undocumented students are seen, valued, and celebrated. Undocumented Resources Centers are beacons of justice, ensuring that undocumented students and their families are embraced with dignity and respect. This is a movement for recognition, a stand for liberation.
